In order to gain control over the market, SAS started taking full or partial control of the local airlines such as Braathens and Widerøe in Norway, Linjeflyg airline and Skyways Express in Sweden and Cimber Air in Denmark. It also had brought shares of Spanair, the now defunct airline of Spain. With the formation of low-cost airlines and with the fares decreasing, SAS found it hard to sustain itself. In order to get in the game, SAS started selling stakes of all the third companies that it holds such as Spanair, AirBaltic & BMI (British Midland International). In 2012, the airline came under immense pressure from its owners and bank to carry out heavy cost cutting which led to the fall out between the management and trade unions. The negotiation took longer than expected but eventually the airline sorted them and kept the airline flying. The airline Blue1 belongs to CityJet since 2015.
